Folate is needed to make new cells and is especially critical during pregnancy and growth. Deficiency produces the same type of anaemia as B12 deficiency.
Folate is found in leafy vegetables, legumes, and fortified foods. Some medications and alcohol can lower levels.

What does low Folate (B9) mean?
Low folate can cause anaemia and raised homocysteine. In pregnancy, low folate raises the risk of neural tube defects in the foetus.
What does high Folate (B9) mean?
High folate is usually harmless and reflects supplementation.
