What is HFE genotype?
your genetic risk of iron overload
HFE genotyping identifies gene variants linked to hereditary haemochromatosis (iron overload). The test is done once in a lifetime.
Two copies of the C282Y mutation give the highest risk of developing iron overload. Being a carrier often means no disease but can be valuable information for family members.

What does low HFE genotype mean?
A negative result makes hereditary haemochromatosis less likely.
What does high HFE genotype mean?
A positive result with two copies of C282Y indicates a high risk of iron overload. Follow-up with ferritin and transferrin saturation is needed.
